because he was such a fundamentally and wholly good person, i’m sure we’re going to see a lot of mainstream and conservative sources appropriating mandela’s feel-good quotes to show their deference to him in the next few days. and we owe it to mandela’s legacy to not let them get away with that.
never forget that apartheid ended in the fucking nineteen NINETIES and never forget that the people who opposed the ANC’s anti-apartheid mission and who threw him in prison and tried to kill him are still alive and still powerful. never forget that the ANC was closely allied with communist groups in south africa and namibia. never forget that without funding and resources from the CIA and american businesses apartheid would’ve ended much, much sooner. never forget that the ANC was considered a terrorist group by the US until two thousand fucking EIGHT. never forget that the ANC actually WAS a terrorist group at some points in history and that mandela himself condoned the use of violence in response to the severe oppression his people underwent.
do justice to the legacy of your idols by remembering them for who they were, not making them safe for mass consumption
They began showing up at dusk last week, wandering the streets, slumped in wheelchairs and sitting on sidewalks, paper plates perched on their knees. By 6:30 p.m., more than 100 homeless people had lined up at a barren corner in Hollywood, drawn by free meals handed out from the back of a truck every night by volunteers.
But these days, 27 years after the Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition began feeding people in a county that has one of the worst homeless problems in the nation, the charity is under fire, a flashpoint in the national debate over the homeless and the programs that serve them.
Facing an uproar from homeowners, two members of the Los Angeles City Council have called for the city to follow the lead of dozens of other communities and ban the feeding of homeless people in public spaces.
Should Los Angeles enact such an ordinance, it would join a roster of more than 30 cities, including Philadelphia, Raleigh, N.C., Seattle and Orlando, Fla., that have adopted or debated some form of legislation intended to restrict the public feeding of the homeless, according to the National Coalition of the Homeless.
There are now about 57,735 homeless people in Los Angeles County, according to the 2013 Annual Homeless Assessment Report released by the Department of Housing and Urban Development last week, a 23.5 percent increase over last year. Only New York had a higher homeless population.
In similar news, the billionaire Mayor of New York City recently banned food donations to the homeless because the city cannot record the salt, fat and fiber content in the food.
Bloomberg, the 13th richest person in the world, also tried to implement a policy that require the homeless to prove they had no where else to go before being accepted into a shelter. Fortunately, a judge struck down the decision.
Reminder that homeless people and the poor in general are routinely and systematically regarded as animals. I can’t describe how disgusted I am by the idea that it would ever be illegal to feed someone. But I really shouldn’t be surprised.

The first meeting on my job, my boss was talking about making the space (a women-only centre) to have more trans women frequenting it, and she wondered aloud where all the trans women could be, since the space was open to all self identified women. (I hate that term btw, it’s so condescending)
So I said “They probably get scared off by the sign outside of our door that says ‘A strong radical feminist voice on campus’”
Oh she was not happy with me saying that.
Vaguely amused by the fact that the same people who spent the last forty years trying to “morally mandate us out of existence” are now surprised that we aren’t willing to show-up to fill-out their diversity quotas.
If you believe in patriarchy theory then you believe that men, throughout history, oppressed their wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters in ways comparable to racism and classism. Except that, obviously, men oppressed their relatives rather than an ethnic, racial, or cultural “other”.
If you believe that men are capable of creating a system expressly for the purpose of oppressing the people they have their most intimate relationships with then you believe that men are sociopaths.
How are men supposed to work with a group of people who deny their humanity?
This is the most twisted logic I’ve ever read. Sociopathy does not flow from patriarchy theory.
First of all, this person has no goddamn idea what sociopathy is, because it has nothing to do with degree of intimacy in a given relationship.
To assert that people have to be sociopaths to oppress people they’re related to is downright idiotic. You’re saying that any man who thinks the woman’s place is in the kitchen, or something along those lines, and has a wife, is a sociopath. They’re certainly wrong, but that is not sociopathy. You should be able to figure that out from the first sentence of the wikipedia entry for sociopathy.
Patriarchy theory does not imply men are sociopaths. It is also not a conscious process, it’s a self-perpetrating psychosocial phenomenon affecting the minds of both men and women, and further perpetrated mostly by men and occasionally by women when it suits their interests.
Man, MRAs will find any logical fallacy they can imagine to complain about feminism.
No one’s calling you a sociopath by talking about patriarchy.
To add in with the excellent commentary above, this is exactly why patriarchy (and other systems of oppression or discrimination) is so effective - when questioned, it’s too easy to demonize anyone who points out the problems. Because saying that feminists are calling men sociopathic is far easier than acknowledging you’re part of a cultural system built upon subjugating another group of people.
What I think when i see that gay marriage isn’t legal yet omfg
What I think when I see that you’d have to work almost more hours than there are in a week to afford rent and food on minimum wage.
What I think when I see that we still don’t have an inclusive ENDA, that in most of the country you can be fired for being queer or trans*.
What I think when I see that queer youth are 8 times as likely to be homeless as their cishet peers.
What I think when I see that nearly all insurance programs don’t cover trans*-specific healthcare, that doctors can legally refuse to treat trans* patients for completely unrelated conditions on basis of trans*-ness, that until the ACA took effect, being trans* was used as pre-existing condition to deny coverage.
When I see that nearly all states have no protections for trans* students, that 15% of those students will drop out to avoid harassment, that over half of trans* youth consider suicide.
When I see that the Republicans are trying to ban abortion and deregulate child labor.
When corporal punishment for children is legal in nearly all states; when parent murder their kids through willful neglect and only get an actual murder charge the second time it happens.
When a black man is randomly shot down by trigger-happy police, and then charged for assault because some of the bullets aimed at him hit bystanders, and nothing is done to the people who shot the guns; when incidents like this happen nearly every week—just the ones we hear about.
When the congressional science committee is majority anti-science.
When the wage gap(s) still exist, and are still defined in terms of men’s earnings = 1.0.
When all these issues are only the tip of the iceberg, and this in just one country with less than a quarter of the world population.
And the only thing you think of is MARRIAGE???
